I repeated the Mantra with her explores the space between intimacy, repetition and surrender.
At the centre of the drawing, two figures lie closely together, almost merging into a single form. Around them, a repeating radial structure expands outward. What begins as a simple pattern gradually becomes something ritualistic: a visual mantra in which repetition shifts attention away from the individual line and towards rhythm, concentration and experience.
The title suggests an action performed together. Yet it remains deliberately ambiguous whether the mantra is spoken, thought, drawn or simply experienced through the presence of another person. Repetition becomes both an act of control and a way of letting go.
The work reflects a recurring tension within M.V. Baks’ practice: between structure and surrender, the individual and the collective, and the deliberate act of making and the experience that emerges beyond it.
